The First Rule of Ten: A Tenzing Norbu Mystery (Dharma Detective 1) by Gay Hendricks & Tinker Lindsay **GIVEAWAY**

Tenzing Norbu has work troubles. 'Ten' has already swapped life as a Buddhist monk for a career in the LAPD; now he's becoming a private eye. His last day as an LA cop could have gone more smoothly: a simple domestic dispute ends with two bodies, three victims and an unceremonious exit.
But he's in for a rude awakening if he thinks life as a PI is going to be less complicated. His first case is a tangle of strange cults, Hollywood double-dealing and suspicious deaths.
Even with his years of spiritual training, Ten has a hard time balancing deadly suspects, a wayward pet cat, a fiery ex-partner and the start of a new romance...

The First Rule of Ten by Gay Hendricks and Tinker Lindsey is the first of a new detective series published in the UK on 3 February 2014 by Hay House.

It can often feel as though the market is flooded with police crime series, and I'm usually quite wary of embarking on yet another series, but I have enjoyed every page of this story and very much look forward to reading the next in the series.

Our hero is Tenzig Norbu (known to readers as just 'Ten').  He's used to be a Tibetan Monk, then joined LAPD.  We meet him just as he leaves the force and decides to make his living as a Private Investigator.

Ten grew up in a monastery, he loved reading Sherlock Holmes novels and tries to base his actions on what his hero would do. He's had some pretty unique life experiences, he's seen some horrific crimes, yet he tries to live his life according to his spiritual beliefs.  Sometimes that's difficult for Ten, especially when dealing with ex-girlfriends, or gruesome murders, but it's clear that Ten is a good guy through and through.

The First Rule of Ten could quite easily have felt like the authors wanted to preach to the reader, with the references to mindfulness and Ten's reflections on the whys and hows, but it doesn't.  It's a fast paced murder story that draws the reader in very well.   I especially liked the glimpses back into Ten's past, his family relationships, his far from normal upbringing with his unusual parents.  The story is not overwhelmed by this detail, but just enough is added to allow readers to get a real taste for Ten's character.

Murders, cults, disreputable police departments, dysfunctional families and a dash of political intrigue all come together to make The First Rule of Ten an absorbing and quite exciting read, with a bit of difference.

I look forward to the next two books of the series; The Second Rule of Ten,  The Third Rule of Ten and The Broken Rules of Ten which is a prequel to the series and introduces the reader to Ten as a 13-year-old boy.
