I read Home Truths in almost one sitting whilst in Corfu last month. I've read previous books by this author and enjoyed them very much. Home Truths is probably my favourite so far, it's a compelling and cleverly constructed story of domestic disharmony, lies and secrets and has twists and turns that I certainly didn't anticipate.
We are introduced to two couples. Two couples who appear to have no connection. There's Eleanor and Alex, who meet when American Eleanor met Police Officer Alex when she went to report a suspected stalker. Alex became her saviour, he promises to protect her and love her and they are now making a life together in a new location.
Miles away, Christie is uneasy in her marriage to Paul. A clairvoyant once told her to 'never trust your husband' and whilst Chrissy knows that Paul is a good man, she can't forget that warning.
The reader accompanies the characters through twenty plus years, and we hear the individual voices of all four main characters. This allows the reader to see the same story through different eyes, but despite this, she cleverly hides so many things from us. We know, as readers, that there has to be a connection between these people, we also know via snippets interwoven into the story that someone is in prison. We don't know who and we don't know why.
Seskis is skilled in developing both character and storyline, and whilst this is set over a long period, it's never slow. It's an intriguing and fascinating look at relationships with a sense of unease throughout.
The final reveal is masterfully done, I tried to second-guess the author many times and failed miserably. It's an entertaining read that kept me on my toes and one that I'd recommend.
