They Thought I Was Dead by Peter James #TheyThoughtIWasDead @peterjamesuk @panmacmillan #SandysStory #BookReview

Some will know how it begins . . .

My name is Sandy.

My husband is Detective Superintendent Roy Grace.

But when I disappeared, even he couldn't find me . . .

This is my story.

There's more to Sandy than meets the eye. A woman with a dubious past, a complicated present and an uncertain future.

Then she was gone.

Some will think they know how it ends . .

Her disappearance caused a nationwide search. Even the best detective on the force couldn't find her.

They thought she was dead.

But nobody knows this . . .

Where did she go? Why did she run? What would cause a woman to leave her whole life behind and

simply vanish?

For the first time the truth behind Sandy Grace’s dramatic disappearance is revealed. They Thought I Was Dead will thrill fans and new readers alike with its gripping story of a woman on the run. This is Sandy's story.

They Thought I Was Dead by Peter James was published in hardback on 9 May 2024 by Pan Macmillan. My thanks to the publisher who sent my copy for review.

I started to read this on the flight out to Corfu a couple of weeks ago, and finished it on my first day of holiday. It is the story that all DS Roy Grace fans have been waiting for and to be totally honest, I was utterly shocked by it all!

Sandy is the wife of DS Roy Grace, the lead character in Peter James' hugely popular crime fiction series. Sandy has never been seen in the series, she disappeared before the first book, on her husband's thirtieth birthday. Throughout the Grace series, readers have been tantalised by Sandy and where she may be. We've always known a little bit more than Grace himself, but we never really knew the real Sandy.

Now we do! What a complex and quite disturbing character she is. She's absolutely nothing like I imagined her to be, and to be honest, I don't think Grace really knew her either!  Peter James uses Sandy's own voice to relate the tale of her sudden and mysterious disappearance and it's a sordid, frightening and explosive tale that she tells. With characters who will scare the daylights out of you, along with some totally and utterly misguided decisions by Sandy herself, this is a novel that keeps the attention throughout. All of the way through, I was hoping that Sandy may just take a step back and look at herself and her life, and learn.  Does she?  No, not really!

It's really a tragic story of addiction and desperation. How one woman who seemed to have it all threw it away and just made things worse and worse as time progressed. There's tragedy and sadness, there are smooth talkers who are not what they appear and there are some really dastardly evil folk, all combined to make a twisty tale that leads to a shocking and unexpected ending.

I'm glad we now know Sandy's story, but to be honest, I think Grace has been better off without her!
