Welcome to day three of the His Other Life BLOG TOUR.  I'm really thrilled to be part of the tour for this highly unusual book.

When I read the blurb for His Other Life, I thought it was going to be another of the 'domestic noir' psychological thriller type novels that are very popular at the moment. I'm a huge fan of that genre, so was delighted to receive an early review copy.

When my copy arrived, I was quite surprised by the cover. I love the cover, but it didn't seem to fit with what I was expecting. Then I started to read it and yes, it's a story about a very strange and controlling relationship, and yes, the husband has disappeared, and yes, some of the things that the reader learns about him are quite disturbing. However, His Other Life is a totally different style to that I had expected. It's funny and tender, and although there is a tense, dark theme running through it, it really is a charming read. Let's call it a romantic comedy crossed with a domestic chiller - there, that's a new genre!

The story centres around Grace and her husband Adam. They've been married for just a year when Adam disappears. As Grace digs deeper into Adam's life she realises that she actually knows nothing about him, or his past, or his friends, or even what he keeps inside his wardrobe.

Grace is determined to find out just what has happened to Adam, and in doing so she also realises quite a lot about herself. Her insecurity and vulnerability are uppermost, she's spent her life expecting so little of herself, and these feelings have been reinforced by how her family view her, and then by how Adam has treated her.

Beth Thomas has created a quirky and lovable character in Grace. Her habit of Googling just about anything made me smile, her friends Ginger and Matt are the perfect supporting characters, her family and Adam's mother are vibrant, real and a little bit mad. Not every author could take such a potentially dark storyline and create a comedy from it without trivialising the issue, but Beth Thomas has achieved it, with grace and with style.

His Other Life has a great plot, it's intriguing and it was incredibly easy to get carried away by the story. I was really impressed by this novel, and more than a little surprised.

Beth Thomas wrote her first book at the age of six. It was a short social commentary about ethnicity and fear of being different, incorporating magic, travel, adventure and ultimately, murder. The death at the end was an unexpected shock and came about as she had no idea how else to end the story.
She thinks she’s improved since then, and hope that now her endings are a little more planned and satisfying.
She lives in Kent with her family.
