This is my first attempt at a book review. I'm not very good at it and I'm going to leave it to Anne in the future; I'll stick with watching SAW films and Red Dwarf!
Anne and I met Nic at the Harrogate Crime Festival in the summer and we all got on like a house on fire. Nic told us about her book and I was keen to read it. I don't read loads of books, and tend to only read whilst I'm on holiday, and it is generally crime fiction. However, I grew up reading and loving James Herbert, Steven King and Dennis Wheatley, so really wanted to give this a try.
Descent To Hell accompanied us on our recent trip to Croatia, where I was lucky enough to read it in the sunshine, with a couple (!!) of gin and tonics to wash it down.
Descent To Hell is very readable, OK so 'readable' is not a great word, but I hope you know what I mean? It has a great plot, with characters that constantly surprise the reader. Who ever thought of Lucifer, the Devil, sitting behind a desk in a business suit? This is the sort of thing that I enjoy in a book; something different, unusual and clever.
I'll admit that I wasn't scared by Descent To Hell, it's not your typical James Herbert esque horror; there's a dry sense of humour running right through it and it reminded me of the TV series Supernatural (another favourite of mine). However, it's quite a tense read and the tension builds up towards the end, which I thought was excellent.
Descent To Hell is a really enjoyable and Nic Parker's writing is great. I really enjoyed the humour and will certainly be reading the next in the series.
