When Aimee comes home and discovers her husband is missing, she doesn’t seem to know what to do or how to act. The police think she’s hiding something and they’re right, she is – but perhaps not what they thought. Aimee has a secret she’s never shared, and yet, she suspects that someone knows. As she struggles to keep her career and sanity intact, her past comes back to haunt her in ways more dangerous than she could have ever imagined.

Any and all of these words could describe Aimee Sinclair - or could they?
Aimee is an actress, just beginning to get recognised, on the brink of super stardom. She's currently filming the final scenes of a film in which she plays a murderer.

Aimee is married to Ben; theirs was something of a whirlwind romance and things are not going so well. Ben is controlling and jealous and quite frankly, Aimee has had enough. She's regretting their marriage.
When she arrives home to find an empty house and no sign of Ben she assumes he's gone off to nurse his hurt pride, after all, she did ask for a divorce, until she realises that his phone and keys are still on the table.

The police seem to think that Aimee has something to do with his disappearance. When her bank card is refused and she finds that £10,000 has gone from their account, the bank tell her that the account was closed .... they say that SHE closed the account. Aimee doesn't remember doing that .... or does she?

Interwoven with the modern-day mystery, is Aimee's childhood story. From her beginnings in rural Galway, to a bookies in an English town, her upbringing was dysfunctional, abusive and violent.

The whole story is told from Aimee's point of view and as the reader learns more about her background, it becomes difficult to trust her as an adult narrator. Where is Ben? Who is stalking Aimee?  How the hell did a dead body end up buried in her garden?

This author spares the reader absolutely nothing. There are scenes of graphic violent abuse towards Aimee as a child, and descriptions of animal cruelty too, and at times it all felt just a little bit too much. However, each twisty turn pulls the reader in deeper, and despite any misgivings about some of the more descriptive scenes, it's difficult not to continue to frantically turn the pages.

There's lots to discuss in this novel. The question of early childhood experiences and effects of those on us as adults. Should be define ourselves by what has happened to us, can we ever excuse our behaviour because of past hurts? Whilst Alice may have tried to re-invent herself, and forget her past, has she ever really let go?

I expect everyone who reads crime and thrillers tries to guess where the author is going next,  and imagines that they've worked out exactly what's going to happen, and who did it. Well, I tried, but I was so so wide of the mark, I was practically in another room! The conclusion to this story will blow your mind. Totally unexpected and one of the biggest curveballs that I've ever encountered in a story.

This is dark and very chilling story that is cleverly written. I was filled with a sense of unease whilst reading it and never ever quite knew just who Aimee was. I can't say that I liked her, but she's brilliantly portrayed and one of the deepest and most complex characters I've met.

I Know Who You Are will keep you on the edge of your seat.
