Now here's a turn up for the books! Me, reading a Dr Who novel - I really didn't think that would ever happen!
I was intrigued to discover that the latest Dr Who novel was written by Jenny T Colgan - otherwise known as Jenny Colgan, yes same name, without the 'T'! I'm a big fan of Jenny Colgan's books, and have been for some years now, and just wasn't sure how she was going to tackle the next novel about the eternal Time Lord. Dark Horizons by Jenny T Colgan was published on 5 July by Ebury (Random House)
It's great fun! It really really is. Jenny has written the novel with Matt Smith in mind as the lead role, and
believe me, you really can imagine Smith doing and saying all of the things that is attributed to him the book. he's a bit of a nutcase, he's very funny and so so loveable. So even though the book is full of hairy Vikings, fires that float on water and pretty petulant Princesses, and just not my usual kind of thing at all, I loved every page. My husband kept looking over at me in amazement - he's the real Dr Who fan in this house and was convinced that I would abandon the novel before I got even half-way through.
Lovers and followers of Dr Who, and especially Matt Smith's Dr Who will love this story, but so will fans of Jenny Colgan, and fans of a real fun, feel-good read. I'd recommend it anyone, it's especially good when read in the garden in the sunshine!
So, I guess everyone knows that Matt Smith has given up the role of Dr Who. There is much discussion and debate online about who will replace him - will it be someone unknown, or someone already famous, or hey, will it be a woman??
Ebury Publishers have very kindly offered three paperback copies of Dr Who : Dark Horizons by Jenny T Colgan as prizes to be won here on Random Things. I thought about doing the usual Rafflecopter giveaway, but I had a better idea!
To enter to win a copy, just comment below, telling me who you think should play the next Dr Who, and
why. Jenny Colgan has kindly agreed to be the judge - she'll pick out her three favourites answers and I'll announce the winner next Sunday evening (14 July 2013.
So, thinking caps on. Who do YOU think will make the perfect Dr Who?
Jenny has a special Facebook page for her Dr Who writing - about Dr Who, and everything. Yeah!

ReplyDeleteRobbie Williams because he's always wanted to be an actor.
ReplyDeleteTony Robinson as he has a mouth on him
ReplyDeletegary barlow
ReplyDeleteMy hubby James, as he is beginning to get a complex that my daughter may love Dr Who more than him lol x
ReplyDeleteNathan Stewart-Jarrett as he is incredabilly sexy so will raise the female viewers and its also about time that we had a black Dr.
ReplyDeleteDavid Mitchell: partly because he's a bit eccentric; but mainly because when his name comes up, my Mum always says 'Who..?'.
ReplyDeleteIdris Elba ... although I might find him too distracting but the Cybemrmen wouldn't stand a chance
ReplyDeleteRussell Brand-can see him in as a madcap Doctor a la Gene Wilder as Willie Wonka!
ReplyDeleteI'd vote for Steve Backshall from Deadly 60 - my Dr Who mad 11 year old (James) and I had a long conversation about this just the other day. Stevie B is a bit of eye candy for the ladies but my son was worried he'd be too distracted by wildlife to save anyone! James is going to be The Doctor one day so he just needs this next one to keep the place warm until he is old enough. You read it here first.

ReplyDeleteShe could disarm any Dr Who monster with her amazing wit and comedy stares.
And she's already got 'dalek bumps'. ;)
Add Mad Alice (from The Vicar Of Dibley) as a companion and Hugh Grant (remember the Children In Need snog???) as a love interest and you have an instant hit.
P.S I'm actually replying from an alternate reality because I didn't Turn Left.:)
I'd like to have given Rowan Atkinson a shot at it as I liked his look in Fatal Death and his personality too. Trouble is, is he now too old? Therefore I need Matt Smith to go back in time, pick up mr Atkinson in Fatal Death and bring him back to us in the future and let him loose at Christmas when Matt regenerates. Obviously this is all a bit timey wimey, but it's worth a go :-)

I'd say Kevin McKidd in all of his ginger glory. Because the disappointment had to stop: the Doctor has to be ginger now. (Or back then. Or in a few millennia. You know what I mean...)
ReplyDeleteKelly McDonald or Kate Winslet could work because it is the 21st century and time for woman to get a go!!
ReplyDeleteRobbie Coltrane - a brilliant, funny and talented actor, who would really look the part ducking into the TARDIS!
